The metaphor of the firefly in the bottle illuminates the healing power of therapy.
The firefly finds themself in a bottle and cannot make their way out. The bottle is the environment they are born into. The firefly did not choose to be born into this bottle but it is trapped there by the blueprinting of trauma or neglect. The firefly knows they want to free themself from this bottle but cannot see the way out. Others might blame them for flying into the bottle; they might blame themselves.
The therapist's first step is to join the firefly in the bottle in order to deeply understand how they got into the bottle, what it feels like inside, and uncover a possible way out. The therapist makes attempts to understand how trapped, frustrated, and injured the firefly might feel in the bottle. Working through therapy, and the relationship with the psychotherapist, the firefly can find new ways of thinking and feeling, freeing themself from the bottle to shine their light across the dark sky (adapted from Stolorow, Atwood, & Orange, 1998).
